In an unknown diamond mining area in South America, a dictatorial army attempted to close a mine but was met with armed resistance from the workers. French miner Castin (portrayed by Charles Vanel) falls in love with Jin (portrayed by Simone Signoret), a prostitute in the mining town. After being accused of leading a riot, he decided to take Jin and his only daughter Maria (played by Michele Girardon) and leave by boat at night. Father Lisardi (played by Michel Piccoli), a missionary in the town, was misunderstood by the townspeople to protect Castin and had no choice but to flee together. The explorer Chuck (played by Georges Machal), who blew up the military command post during the riot, also arrived on the ship that night and forced everyone to abandon the ship halfway and flee on foot through the tropical rainforest to Brazil. Five people were trudging through the rainforest where mosquitoes were rampant. They were starving and kept getting lost. Some had hallucinations and some went crazy in despair. Can they really get out of danger and escape successfully? This film is the second installment of the trilogy that Luis Bunuel co-produced with France after his exile ended and he returned to the European film industry.[Collapse]
