Pei (played by Keisha Castle-Hughes) is the granddaughter of the chief of an ancient tribe on the coast of New Zealand. Mother once gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl, but unfortunately, both she and the baby boy died. Disheartened, father left for another place, leaving the orphan girl Pei to be raised by her grandparents. Grandma doted on Pei very much, but Chief Koro (played by Rawiri Paratene) once believed that his granddaughter was an ominous person. What troubles Koro even more now is the issue of the heir. This tribe has a strict creed: the heir must be male. Seeing that his son was unable to inherit the family business, Koro was extremely distressed. He selected strong men from among his people, hoping to cultivate them into leaders, but the result was far from satisfactory. However, his granddaughter Pei was practicing all kinds of martial arts, determined to take over her grandfather's responsibility. Koro, however, insisted on abiding by the rules of his clan and did not allow women to take the position of leader. It was not until a whale was stranded on the coast here that things began to take a turn for the better. With her outstanding courage and ability, Pei made her grandfather change his decision.[Collapse]
