After her mother's death, Kate (played by Helena Bonham Carter) was taken in by her aunt, Marder (played by Charlotte Rampling). Marder hopes that Kate can marry a rich man and live a life free from worries about food and clothing from then on. However, the rebellious Kate falls in love with Morton (played by Linus Roache), an unknown young reporter. A rich girl named Millie (portrayed by Alison Elliott) appeared by Kate's side. She was seriously ill and had little time left. The innocent Millie fell in love with Morton. Kate saw all of this and came up with a brilliant plan that could both get Millie's family property and win Morton's love. Soon, she and Millie became close friends who could talk about anything. However, human hearts were not as easy to manipulate as Kate had imagined. Seeing that the feelings between Morton and Millie were getting deeper and deeper and about to get out of control, Kate fell into a deep sense of unease.[Collapse]
