During the Tang Dynasty, Zhong Kui (Luo Lelin), a jinshi (imperial scholar) from Central and Southern China, went to the capital to take the imperial examination. The emperor failed to make it to the list because of his ugly appearance. Zhong, frustrated by his failure, committed suicide. The Heavenly Emperor bestowed upon him the title of the Holy Lord for Slaying Demons and Monsters. After Kui came back to life, in order to repay his good friend Du Ping (played by Li Wenbiao) for his burial, he arranged a marriage between his sister Zhong Ling (played by CAI Shanyi) and Ping.
