Clara was the first female doctor of chemistry in Germany. Her husband, Fritz Harper, was a renowned German chemist, the father of nitrogen fertilizer and the father of chemical warfare in World War I. He won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for nitrogen fertilizer, but was criticized for developing numerous chemical weapons. Later, due to his Jewish identity, he was expelled from Germany and some of his relatives also died
